How Candidates Can Prepare for a Successful Interview

Most interview advice is either obvious or unhelpfully vague. In practice, interview success comes down to a few disciplined habits that any candidate can build.

Research properly. Go beyond the company's homepage: understand its products, customers, competitors, and recent news. Read the job description closely and map each requirement to an example from your experience. Interviewers immediately notice candidates who have done this work.

Structure your answers. For behavioural questions — 'Tell me about a time when…' — use a simple structure: situation, task, action, result. Keep answers under two minutes and end with what you learned. Rambling is the most common reason strong candidates underperform.

Prepare your own questions. Asking thoughtful questions signals seriousness and helps you judge the employer. Ask about success measures for the role, the team's priorities, and how the manager works. Avoid questions answerable by a quick look at the website.

Handle difficult questions honestly. Gaps, job changes, and weaknesses are not disqualifying — evasive answers are. Briefly state the facts, what you learned, and why the current role fits your direction.

Mind the basics. Test your technology for video calls, plan to arrive early for in-person meetings, and dress one notch above the company's everyday norm. Follow up with a short, specific thank-you note within a day.

Finally, remember that an interview is a two-way evaluation. The same preparation that impresses employers also tells you whether the role deserves you.
